Ayurveda is commonly translated as The Science of Life. It is an ancient holistic
healing art form that originated on the Indian continent about 5000 years ago. It
is believed to be the oldest healing science. Over the years it has all but disappeared,
however, it has seen a renewed interest and revival in the last century. It pays
attention to the complete person and the environment in which they live. Ayurveda
believes that the way we look, act and feel are the result of three energies at
play with their own distinct qualities. These energies are called Doshas. The main
goal of Ayurveda has always been to address the balance of your dominant dosha with
your environment and lifestyle resulting in good health and harmony in body, mind
and spirit.
Ayurvedic treatments include a variety of massage techniques, uses herbal ingredients,
oils, wraps, and steam to treat the body and skin. Many of today's popular spa treatments
are rooted in classic ayurvedic treatments that has been practised and proven effective
for centuries.
A healthy diet, exercise, meditation, and proper self care is integral to the Ayuervedic
lifestyle to ensure a healthier and happier individual.
Marma points resemble the acupuncture and acupressure points of traditional Chinese
medicine but extend to larger areas of the body. Marmas are the centers for vital-force
(energy) or Prana. Trauma, constant stress and generally living out of touch with
the body and self - regularly neglecting proper rest, lacking regular exercise,
neglecting self care and unhealthy eating habits - are believed to cause a "closing"
of these points and disturbing the flow of Prana. Toxins, negative emotions and
stress get lodged in these points. Massage (manipulation) and Hatha yoga are some
more commonly practiced techniques used to "open" these points. Overall improvement
of mood, strain in the body and some physical symptoms (for example sinus pressure
and headaches) can be experienced. The face, chest and head have the largest density
of points. Ayurvedic massage focuses on the points in need of stimulation to release
the flow of energy. To experience the benefits of Marma Therapy while enjoying a
very relaxing facial try the Ayurvedic Facial with Marma point Face massage and
Foot treatment.
Doshas are themselves a combination of energy of the five elements namely earth,
water, fire, air and space. The three doshas are Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Imbalances
in the doshas will affect how we think, act and feel emotionally and physically.
Becoming familiar with your given energy network, living it, and learning to keep
it in balance and harmony is basic in Ayurveda.
How does my dosha change my treatment?
Regardless of your dominant dosha the skin will be treated to balance its current
state. However, the overall experience is more pleasurable and effective if your
dosha balance (or imbalance) for that day is addressed. For example: You just hurried,
feel hot and suffer from hot flashes to boot. Pitta is high and therefore a cooling
drink and soothing treatment is better than if you were to receive a hot cup of
tea and got wrapped in warm blankets.
You've hurried all day and can not think straight although the chatter in your head
is non stop. Vata is high and a soothing, comforting combination of smells and touch
is best to calm you down.
You feel sluggish and tired and sweat easily, Kapha is out of balance. A facial
with heavy creams and oils is going to make you feel even worse. You will benefit
more from the use of stimulating and refreshing products in consistency and smell.
If you understand your dominant dosha you can judge better what services to choose
and you can discuss those preferences with me. Dosha balancing ingredients and techniques
are used to treat you and you will enjoy a more effective and personal service.
